Safety, Reels, Buoys, Flags and Lift Bags:

These have become very important accessories for the recreational diver that is diving overseas.

In South Africa we rely on the Divemaster to carry the buoy and we simply carry a rescue sausage for the surface as a safety accessory. When we are diving overseas such as the Red Sea – all divers are expected to carry a reel and a buoy that can be deployed from 5m to alert the boats to your position.

Purpose of a Float

A float has a couple of purposes. First is to hold the divers flag on top. This will tell boat owners and other divers that you are under the water and to stay clear. Very important and a great safety item as last thing you need is for a boat to come driving over top of you.

It also allows you to attach fish to the float so you do not have to swim back to the boat or shore every time. This will save you time and a lot of effort. Last but certainly not least, the most important purpose for keen spero’s who love their gun. Basically a float is attached to a rope or float line, generally 15mtr – 30mtr which is the secured to your gun handle via shark clip. The reason for this is if the fish decides to put up a fight or take off downwards, you can let go of your gun. Go catch your breath then find your float. The gun will be connected to the float. The fish will have tired so you can pull up your gun via the rope.
